Wax Carving Technique Series:
The D Blank

Did you know that most of the jewelry you see in stores, galleries, and magazines began as a piece of wax? A model of the artist's design is carved from a special jeweler's wax, which can then be cast into silver, gold, or even platinum.

The first in our series of wax technique videos, The D Blank takes you step by step through the process of creating a framework for almost any ring design. Rather than teaching you to make one particular ring, the D Blank is a foundation that allows you to "rough out" the technical details of your design first; the height and width of the ring, the width and thickness of the shank, the taper of the shank, and the desired ring size. Once you have established the basic form, you are free to focus on the more creative aspects of your design. The D Blank is also a great way to familiarize yourself with some basic tools and measuring instruments that you'll be using in ALL of your wax carving projects.
