All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth. ~Richard Avedon

Any photo can be used effectively in a website. When I built the gallery for our Precious Metal Arts site long ago, I was blissfully unaware of the convention that jewelry should be displayed on a white (non-existant) background. While there is a certain logic to “paring down” the information that has to be crammed into one place, I think it is unfortunate that so many people resort to the same solution. But there is a time and place for this technique. Some of these images were shot for designer Irene Neuwirth to use on her line sheets, and the buyer at Neiman Marcus said they were the best she'd seen. When it works, it works.
